It continues….

Today I spent half an hour at alocal canal spot trying to get some decent bracketed shots to turn into HDR shots.

I think I am finally getting the hang of it now as I am myself pleased with the result.

A particular style – Californian.

From time to time you come across a photographer who seems to have developed a style that you can say is specific to them. Through a complete coincidence I found such a photographer. His name is Timothy Long and you can see his work here. I also like what he’s done with the web site.

What I like about this Californian is the natural look and feel of his work. If photography can be laid back this is it. It makes me want to move to California, it is cool, so please check it out.

The last post talked about my views on HDR, so I thought I would give it a go.

I’ve went for the basic approach and not too ambitious to start with. What do you think?

HDR or not to HDR

HDR seems to be one of those topics in photography that will divide opinion. Some say you either love it or hate it. Personally I think you can both love it and hate it.

I don’t deny you can get some photographs that are highly saturated and you could say unnatural looking. However, if you feel photography is an art form as I do, then surely this is just a personal interpretation. I, as no doubt you have, have seen HDR shots ‘overdone’. Some jump at the chance to criticise these, but if it is done right, they can still look great. The hyper real impression they give is not intended to be a realistic interpretation of what is in front of the photographer’s eye, instead a view of what they want you to see. There is nothing wrong with that. It is after all what art in the form of painting has been doing for hundreds and hundreds of years….showing you what the painter wants you to see.

If you think a photographs purpose is simply to replicate what the human eye sees then I am afraid the point is being missed.

So, you can over do the ‘strength’ of the tone mapping, saturation etc, and still achieve a great result. Can’t you? No, not quite. You see, anyone can go mad on the tone mapping and saturation. You can go heavy on the luminosity and contrast and basically just move all the sliders to the right. That just doesn’t cut it.

Even if you want that ‘overdone’ look to be right, its not as simple as you think.

Its completely about interpretation, so lets see more efforts to encourage and not criticise.

Animals make some of the best subjects for photography, but equally the most challenging. It’s one area that takes patience, and a lot of practice.

I classify these shots under the loose heading of nature, as it is, apart from landscapes the most natural photography. Colours, texture abound, and its one of my favourite subjects.

Over the years, I have noticed that the best feedback has been on those natural shots, taken in gardens, parks, parties, even just playing in the house. With the right light, and the right atmosphere, you can get that special moment, that special look in their eyes that does not come out too easily in posed studio situations. Below are just some of the shots that hopefully demonstrate this.
